SUPPLIES.
If you have any of these items (or similar) already then there is no need to buy more. I have provided links for all items on utrecht.com, but you can buy them anywhere. Where brands are important, I have said that, otherwise any brand will do. If you need to buy all these supplies, as I have listed them, it will cost you about $100.
OIL PAINTS:
A note on oil paint brands: I use primarily Gamblin colors, and some Utrecht and Williamsburg. You can use whatever one you like.
Titanium White buy here
Burnt Umber buy here
Ultramarine Blue buy here
Cadmium-free Yellow (medium) buy here
Cadmium-free red (medium) buy here
Feel free to use real cadmium red and cadmium yellow, especially if you have them. I use real cadmium paints in my paintings, but cadmium is not considered a safe material, so decide what will work for you. Honestly, any opaque bright red or opaque bright yellow is probably going to be fine (it will say ‘opaque’ or ‘transparent’ on the tube).
Optional: Quinacridone red or magenta buy here
Optional: Perylene Red buy here
BRUSHES
The important thing to look for when purchasing brushes is that they are oil painting brushes and the width of the bristles at the base of the brush - you might want to grab a ruler and see if you already have brushes that will work, or go shop for brushes in person at an art store. Again - the length of the bristles is not that important here, but the width is. But DO make sure they are brights or flats - not filberts or rounds for the basic set. Three paint brushes are sufficient - one small (3-4 mm), one medium (6-8 mm), one large (10-18 mm). But the more, the better - I listed a bigger optional brush that would be nice to have.
Size 2 Flat Brush (or similar - bristles are 3mm wide) buy here
Size 6 and/or a Size 8 Flat Bristle Brush (or similar - bristles are 6mm - 8 mm wide) buy here
Size 14 (12 mm wide) buy here
Optional Size 18 Flat (17 mm wide) buy here
OMS (oderless mineral spirits): Gamsol OMS (brand important) buy here or Utrecht NOOD looks fine, too.
MEDIUM: Gamblin solvent free gel medium. buy here
This brand is important. It is non-toxic and versatile. You should try this. Either the liquid or the gel are fine.
BRUSH CLEANING JAR: buy here
PALETTE
Please use a glass or a wooden palette. Your Palette color should match (or be similar to) the color of the ground you will be painting on. We will be painting all of our supports a warm brown before we begin our paintings - I have made you a quick video about that and you can watch it here.
Wood: Here is a fancy one and here is a simple one, from amazon. The important part is that it is a natural wood color - you may be able to find one at an art store near you.
Glass: It’s great to have a glass palette. You may have a piece that will work, or you can order one from a local glass store. It should be at least 1/4” thick, tempered safety glass. It should be clear and you’ll need to paint the back - paint it the same color as your ground - or find a similarly colored piece of paper to lay your palette on. It should be at least 8x10”.
SUPPORT: Strathmore 400 Series Oil Painting Pad. buy here.
This Oil Painting Pad is the easiest and least expensive support to buy. If you already have other surfaces that you want to use, great. Anything made for oil painting will be fine. If you are using paper or unstretched canvas, please have a support on hand to tape your painting to (anything like a clipboard will do).
OTHER SUPPLIES:
old t-shirts
old towels (or paper towels)
a little plastic or glass jar or palette cup (like these) for your medium if it is liquid (no need for this if you bought the gel medium). Or a little squirt bottle.
